My friend Roland's wife just turned 40. And being the good hubby that he is, he asked me to create a New York themed piece of artwork because he's surprising her with a trip to the Big Apple!
He wanted three things: a skyline, the letters "NY" and the symbol with the 4 hiding inside the zero. (When I first saw that I thought it was spooky and pentagram-like but I'm loving it now).
It's always hard to make something for other people, especially when they already have somewhat of an idea of what they want in their heads. So I was a little nervous about it, especially since Roland is an amazing artist himself. I was sort of wondering if it wouldn't just be better to teach the guy to sew.
He had mentioned he liked "scratch technik" and I had the argyle paper in taxi-cab yellow that seemed just right. I'm happy how it came together with the silver spray paint giving off a "glow" effect. I sent him a preview asking for a green light before I started stitching and he called back saying it was "brilliant."
Happy Birthday Katja, I can't wait to hear about the trip you lucky gal!
This is an incredible piece. How glorious to be commissioned to create something so personal! Great job.
